What is Colon Hydrotherapy? ~
Colon hydrotherapy is simply a flush of the gut using warm filtered water and gentle abdominal massage. Many of our clients find that this helps with problems such as constipation, diarrhoea, wind and bloating, and can be a great kick-start to a healthier diet and lifestyle changes.

Why have a colonic?

With the hectic pace of modern life, it can be hard to eat healthily or to exercise as much as we would like - however our bodies really need us to. When you combine a sedentary lifestyle with a diet packed with refined and processed food, it inevitably upsets your digestive system, leading to a range of negative effects on your health.

Colon Hydrotherapy cleanses the bowel and helps to restore a natural balance, which many of our clients say gives them a feeling of well-being and energy. You may find a treatment with us is the inspiration you need to kick-start a healthier approach to your diet and lifestyle.

Who can benefit from a colonic?

Almost anyone can benefit from colon hydrotherapy, regardless of age, gender or lifestyle. Unlike some clinics, we don't make exaggerated claims to 'cure' digestive problems. However, we have seen how our therapy can offer relief from a range of symptoms, including constipation, wind, diarrhoea and bloating. Our clients find the treatment can be particularly useful where modern medicine has fallen short, particularly with a generic diagnosis of IBS.

Of course, you don't have to have a digestive problem to benefit from colonics. Some clients have regular treatments to keep their bowels clean and healthy, just like visiting the dentist.

There are some conditions that make a colonic inadvisable, and your therapist will explain these during your consultation to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for you (see our FAQs section for a full list or talk to your therapist for details). Please note that we do not treat women at any stage of pregnancy.

What happens during a colonic?

Your first visit will take around two hours, during which your therapist will discuss your general health and well-being and ask you to complete a medical questionnaire. This is to ensure that the therapy is safe and appropriate for you.She will then explain the procedure and the equipment that will be used, to ensure that you feel comfortable and reassured. Once we've got to know you, repeat appointments will only need an hour and a half.

After your consultation, you will change into a clinical gown for your treatment. Our therapists are sensitive to your feelings and work hard to minimise any embarrassment and put you at your ease, protecting your privacy and dignity at all times. You will only be exposed for a few seconds, while the tube is inserted, then you will remain covered for the rest of the treatment.

The procedure itself takes around 45 minutes, during which warm, filtered water is introduced into the colon at low pressure, via the rectum, and a gentle abdominal massage is applied. This cleanses the entire length of the colon, flushing out faecal matter, toxins, gas and mucus, which are carried away via a discreet, sealed system, with no mess or smell.

Before and after

There is no special preparation needed for a colonic, although it will help if you make sure you are well hydrated by drinking plenty of water on the day of your treatment. If you are having problems with constipation, you should speak to your therapist in advance as she may recommend a gentle laxative, such as Movicol before your appointment to make the treatment more effective.

To help you maximize and maintain the benefits of your treatment we may offer diet and lifestyle advice that will help you reconnect withyour body and find a natural balance. You may also be offered a course of high strength probiotics to aid your specific digestive problem.

After your treatment you should be able to continue with your day as normal without any problems. However, you should avoid spicy food and alcohol for at least 24 hours.

Are colonics safe?

Absolutely. Since a colonic involves simply flushing out the colon using warm water, at low pressure, there is minimal risk. The water we use is filtered for safety and we only ever use single-use disposable equipment.

However, it is important to be open and honest about your medical history so that we can identify any conditions that may increase the risks from the treatment and advise you accordingly.

How your colon works

You digestive tract is more thantwenty feet long from your mouth to your anus. It is a complex system that involves breaking down and absorbing the nutrients from your food, and removing the waste products from your body. This system is often disrupted by our western diet and lifestyle, as well as the stresses of modern life.

The stomach and small intestine
The stomach and small intestine breaks down and absorbs nutritients from the food you take in using biomechanical and chemical processes. By the time the small intestine has finished with your food it has recovered 95% of its nutritional value.

The large intestine (colon)
The colon is the last part of the digestive tract and is mostly concerned with recovering water from the waste, along with any remaining nutritients. Colon bacteria play a key role in processing the waste and produce digestive gas. The colon has a muscular wall and a rich nerve supply, both of which need regular exercise to keep them working well. A professional colonic can provide this kind of stimulation for your gut.

Digestive problems
It normally takes around 24 hours for your food to travel the length of your intestine, and you should visit the toilet at least once every day to eliminate waste. If this transit time becomes too fast, water cannot be reabsorbed and so you experiencedirrhoea. If it is too slow, too much water is reabsorbed, leaving you constipated and too much gas is produced, leaving you feeling bloated. Colonic hydrotherapy will clear away any waste and encourage your colon to work normally again.

Cleansing the colon

Unlike an enema, colonic hydrotherapy can cleanse the whole of the colon, with warm filtered water introduced at low pressure and spreading along the full length of the large intestine. Skilled abdominal massage ensures that the colonic reaches high up into the colon and removes as much waste as possible.

The gut and the mind
We all instinctively know that our gut and mind are connected. We use phrases like 'butterflies in the stomach' or 'stomach in knots' to describe this feeling. This means that digestive problems can have emotional as well as physical causes. Our therapists take the time to talk through any stress or emotional issues with you as part of your consultation, to help identify external problems that are influencing your internal workings.

Why Cleanse the Colon? ~

The prime functions of the colon are elimination, detoxification, and manufacture of vitamins by friendly gut bacteria. These functions are all to a greater or lesser extent compromised in people eating typical Western diets.

When the capacity of the colon to evacuate or detoxify is overwhelmed, toxins are reabsorbed into the body where they place a burden on your other eliminatory organs - the liver, lungs, kidneys and the skin. There are many possible effects of the resultant auto-toxaemia, from headaches to serious acute illness. Aside from the direct symptomatic effects, toxaemia places a large burden on your immune system, thus increasing your susceptibility to any illness or disease process.
